Nothing About Us, Without Us
Young people in Britain are facing a wellbeing crisis. They are calling on leaders to listen to their concerns, to give them agency over their futures and better equip them with the tools they need to thrive.
On World Mental Health day this report brings our collective attention to the crisis of wellbeing among young people- finding that of those surveyed, 34% feel dissatisfied with their lives.
First and foremost, young people are concerned about their economic prospects, they believe it is harder than it was for their parents to; get a good job (74%), buy a home (94%) and achieve a reasonable standard of living (85%). Just 20% leave school feeling prepared for the real world. We need to do better, to give young people the tools they need to thrive.
The report also finds that social media is accelerating a crisis of loneliness- it is driving dissatisfaction and social isolation. Young people are aware of the negative impacts and want better safeguards, but 73% oppose an all-out ban for under 18s.
Where young people are calling for solutions which protect their agency, and social determination theory explains that agency is the key to wellbeing- we call for political leaders to start listening- because 81% of young people feel that their issues are not recognised, and because people are more likely to buy-in to solutions they propose themselves.
