What does it mean to be English? And is it possible to build a positive and inclusive patriotism?
In the wake of last year’s ‘Raise the Colours’ campaigns, the St George’s Cross has become a divisive symbol, marking pride for some while reinforcing a sense of exclusion and intimidation for others.
This St George’s Day join us for an honest conversation about British patriotism, belonging, and the emotional power of national identity in a time of social and psychological uncertainty.
We cannot afford to concede patriotism to far-right definitions based on loss, anger and nostalgia. We must challenge narrow conceptions of national belonging, and spotlight stories that celebrate British pluralism, diversity and democracy.
